About The Award Winning Book Design

The Brain Plate is a guide and cookbook that teaches people how to optimize their nutrition, improve one’s mood and mental health. The book is written by nutritionists and counselors, Ann Kent and Amanda Ashcraft. 
 
The goal for this book was to strike a balance between mental health and nutrition. The profile silhouette of the face is a common association with psychology, plus their target audience is women. We decided a women’s profile paired with illustrations of nutritional foods for her hair would make for strong imagery.
 
Specific foods associated with helping one’s overall mental health were illustrated including salmon, broccoli, spinach, almonds, grapefruit and more. We developed the colour palette and used illustrations that matched that palette. In the cover’s background, squiggly lines were drawn with lights to represent neuron synapsis in the brain.
